In 1963, Sir Frank Wild Holdsworth (1904–1969) published his description and classification of fractures and dislocations of the spine. He based his classification on the interrelationship of the vertebrae and on the concept of a two-column spine. Although there have been many modifications since, the issues have not been agreed upon to the satisfaction of all, and Holdsworth's classic work is still often cited.1, 2
